An archaeologist with a Ph.D. in archaeology from Arizona State University, Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin is one of the foremost cultural resource management experts in the United States. Over the past two decades, Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin has engaged with a diversity of Department of Defense agencies on planning studies and projects spanning more than 200 military installations.
In one recent project, cemetery specialists with R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. assessed historic cemeteries and burial grounds as part of a Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) initiative focused on documenting historic sites. Their work at cemeteries in four coastal counties encompassed documentation of elements such as cemetery iconography, landscape, marker materials, and historical tombstone carvers to contribute to a full perspective on the importance of several specific historic sites.
One aspect of this work was development of nominations to the National Register of Historic Places of Stonington Cemetery, Cypress Cemetery in Old Saybrook, and of the Connecticut Valley Hospital Cemetery in Middletown. Their listing would highlight their cultural significance and attract more visitors to these unique cultural and historical properties.
