R. Christopher Goodwin, PhD, serves as CEO and director of research at his eponymous archaeological and historical research firm. An expert in assessing the effects of natural disasters on historic landmarks, Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin often conducts resiliency planning work for local governments.
The firm recently assisted the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office in its resiliency planning efforts in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Beginning in 2015, the comprehensive project included archaeological surveys, such as the first comprehensive evaluation of submerged historic shipwrecks along the state’s coastline, and a survey of historic dams in Connecticut's four coastal counties.
The new databases and GIS maps of the state’s historic and cultural resources will help municipal and state leaders to better preserve Connecticut's history and defend threatened heritage resources from extreme weather and rising sea levels. The project also gave city leaders critical information about the condition of historic dams in the area, which will help city planners make more informed decisions when preparing for and recovering from future natural disasters.
