The president of R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates (RCG&A), Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin, is a leading expert in archaeology and historical preservation. Commissioned by the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office, his firm, R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., has worked to strengthen the state’s natural disaster planning and response efforts as they relate to historic preservation.
Coastal communities and areas prone to flooding face increasing threats due to the effects of climate change and sea level rise. Aside from the risks borne by residents, buildings with historical significance and cemeteries also are jeopardized by stronger storms and rising waters. In response to Superstorm Sandy, Connecticut's former Governor Dannel P. Malloy, authorized several historical preservation projects to mediate the effects of climate change on the state’s historical and cultural resources.
The planning and preservation work undertaken by RCG&A included identifying and evaluating properties of historic and archaeological significance; nominating properties to the National and Connecticut Registers of Historic Places; building a geodatabase of historic properties and their locations in Connecticut's four coastal counties; and advising impacted coastal municipalities and Councils of Government on preservation planning and protocols to assist in recovery from future disasters.
