R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. (RCG&A) frequently is commissioned for historical preservation work on high profile projects across the country. Kathryn :M. Kuranda, Senior Vice President of R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc, recently completed nomination and listing of an important modernist architectural property in New Haven, Connecticut. That project, which was part of an extensive multidisciplinary effort in Connecticut led by Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin, included extensive evaluations of the state’s historical and cultural resources, and nomination of eligible properties to the National and Connecticut Registers of Historic Places.
During its work in Connecticut, RCG&A nominated the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church of Christ to the National Register. Located in New Haven. The church was part of the city’s extensive urban development program that took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The building was designed by the well-known modernist architect John MacLane Johansen.
Constructed with split concrete blocks, the Congregational Church of Christ is known for its Brutalist Style. Through carefully considering building materials, geometry, and proportions, Johansen was able to create a striking example of architecture that expresses sculptural beauty while also complementing its urban setting. The Church was listed on the National Register in 2018.
