The work focused on Connecticut's four coastal counties declared a federal disaster area following Hurricane Sandy. The survey efforts included a number of coordinated components, including creating a research guide to Connecticut's historic cemeteries, and developing guidance for cemetery studies in the state including documentation and preservation.
The work addressed historically and culturally significant cemeteries and their monuments, markers, landscapes, periods of significance and historical associations; it also addressed issues such as neglected and crumbling markers.
In addition, National Register of Historic Places nominations were prepared and approved for Stonington Cemetery, Cypress Cemetery in Old Saybrook, and for the Connecticut Valley Hospital Cemetery in Middletown. A cemetery recordation form for use by laymen interested in historic cemeteries also in development; soon to be available to the public on line, it is designed to guide research and documentation by the public, who can share the results of their work with the State Historic Preservation Office.
